Some more good news for people that want to travel by air from Gibraltar airport was just announced to cover the summer period on the Rock.
British Airways has decided to boost its service between London Heathrow and Gibraltar on specific weekends throughout the summer.
For the first time ever, there will be three London Heathrow flights on the same day. This will happen on three Saturdays in April, two in May, two in June, two in July, four in August, five in September and four in October.
Vijay Daryanani, Gibraltar’s Minister for Business and Tourism, said: “This news is very encouraging for overnight tourism, our hotels, and Gibraltar PLC in general. The airline industry is highly challenging and competitive. I have been urging British Airways to increase flights as they have been busy on most days, so I am delighted to see these additional flights becoming available.”
Daryanani added: “It’s the first time ever that we’ve had three flights to Heathrow on the same day. I’m hoping that we can continue to persuade operators to increase their capacity to Gibraltar in the future.”
With some luck, it might also encourage the other operators at the airport to look at their own summer schedules and follow suit with an increase in the number of flights.
At least now, with the new tunnel for cars under the runway, the increase in flights will not cause to much additional disruption for getting in and out of Gibraltar, unless you are on foot or on a cycle.
