There has been much talk in the local press before and after Easter saying that it was a very busy time on the Costa del Sol. This has now been backed up with the information about passenger numbers coming through Malaga Airport.
Malaga Costa del Sol Airport is now the third busiest airport in Spain when it comes to the number of passengers being processed.
It also held the status of the most growth of any Spanish airport post pandemic for the initial quarter of the year 2023, but thanks to the high passenger numbers as well, it leapt up in the rankings.
From the data that Aena provided, Malaga Airport went above Palma de Mallorca, taking way it’s third place status. That just leaves Malaga sitting proudly behind the international airports of Madrid and Barcelona.
The highest passenger numbers, as you would expect, were seen at Madrid Airport with a whopping 4,821,856, although this was actually 1.7% less than the March pre-pandemic.
Second placed Barcelona Airport registered 3,762,656, which was also below pre-pandemic levels. So that means that Malaga Airport not only rose to third, but was one of the few Spanish Airports to exceed pre-pandemic levels, and by a mighty 9% too.
With more of the airlines offering additional flights over the summer, and some airlines providing connections with the Costa del Sol for the very first time, it will be interesting to see where Malaga sites after a busy summer period.
